The South Carolina Gamecocks will need all the help on defense this week, traveling on the road to take on the Florida Gators. The Gamecocks haven't won in Gainesville, Fla. since 2014, and are looking to snap a two-game losing streak to Florida, dating back to 2022-2024.
Head coach Shane Beamer, during his Sunday evening teleconference with the media, gave an update on injured Gamecocks defense back Quay'Sheed Scott. Scott, who was playing against his former team in Kentucky on Saturday, exited the game and did not return.
Beamer told reporters that he should know more about his status on Wednesday. He also scarily added that Scott went to the hospital after the game, presumably for testing.
“Injury-wise, we’ll have an update for you on Wednesday,” Beamer said via Gamecock Central. “Quay’Sheed Scott went to the hospital last night. I think I told you guys that last night in the postgame press conference. He’s been relieved. We’ve just got to do some further testing with him going forward about his availability for Saturday, but hopefully that will be good news over the next couple of days.”
South Carolina opens as two-score road underdogs against Florida for Week 6
Scott was playing well before his injury, registering four solo stops and a tackle for loss during Saturday's game. So far this season, he'a accounted for nine total tackles with three passes defended. The former Kentucky Wildcat played in Lexington during the 2024 and 2025 seasons before transferring to South Carolina this offseason.
It is not clear what the nature of Scott's injury was, or how long he will be out. We should also know more about whether or not Scott will be good to go against Florida during the initial conference injury reports. SEC teams are required to post availability reports for their upcoming games beginning on Wednesday evening, posted at 7 p.m. CT.
South Carolina will look to get its first win over an SEC opponent this season, and break an eight-game conference losing streak that dates back to last season. The Gators hold a 31-3-10 all-time series lead against the Gamecocks.
Scott has been sharing reps at the starting nickelback spot with Gerald Kilgore this season. Having Scott healthy will be key going up a Florida offense that ranks 32nd nationally in passing offense, and was one of the most productive rushing attacks all season until Missouri shut it down last week. South Carolina's defense is tied with Mizzou at 99th in the nation in pass defense, allowing 231 yards in the air per contest.
