The Gamecocks' season opener against Virginia Tech started off with a bang. LaNorris Sellers led South Carolina straight down the field, capping it off with an electric touchdown run to put the Gamecocks up 7-0 as the crowd noise swelled throughout the stadium.

LaNorris Sellers is all substance.

But then, everything came to a grinding halt, and the mistakes -- both mental and physical -- started piling up. The Gamecocks couldn't get out of their own way, and Sellers was doing all he could to muster some sort of offensive production.
A South Carolina interception ended up turning into a Virginia Tech safety, passes were dropped, punts were muffed, and the well-oiled machine that marched down the field in the opening possession suddenly lost a few cogs.
And in the middle of it all, LaNorris Sellers was struggling to make anything happen. It wasn't his fault, but the fact is that he didn't look like LaNorris Sellers.

Yes, it's the first game of the season. Jitters...butterflies...limited reps...and all that. But it became clear early on in this game that there's no way LaNorris Sellers will be able to carry this team on his own once the Gamecocks get into SEC play. He'll need a lot more help than he got today against the Hokies.
It wasn't until Vicari Swain's 4th quarter 80-yard punt return for a touchdown electrified the crowd and the Gamecocks that we saw life from the South Carolina offense again.
LaNorris Sellers can't be everything there is to the Gamecocks offense
While the game was won by the Gamecocks, it's also an example of how dangerous it can be to be a one-trick pony. Sellers needs his supporting cast to be better.
The South Carolina receivers struggled for most of the game to separate themselves and give Sellers a clean target. While the stat line suggests that Sellers had a decent day, it's important to remember that 64 of his 209 passing yards came on one play.
Other than that breakaway touchdown pass to Nyck Harbor, there wasn't a lot there.
When your quarterback is responsible for 234 of your 334 yards, it's a sign that more help is needed. If South Carolina wants to grab that brass ring and find themselves in Atlanta this December, they'll need to make sure LaNorris Sellers isn't alone.
