South Carolina is limping toward the end of a frustrating 2025 season, and with that comes the annual wave of rumors and message-board madness about who’s staying, who’s leaving, and who’s thinking about declaring for the NFL Draft. And of course, Gamecock quarterback LaNorris Sellers is in the middle of the storm.
Sellers is the type of player every fan base across the country circles the minute his name appears in the same sentence as “Transfer Portal.” He’s a big-armed, mobile, high-ceiling talent stuck inside a heartbreaking season that never found its rhythm. After South Carolina went 9-4 last year, the backslide to 3-7 has only amplified the noise. And the rumors are swirling.
Some are claiming that Sellers is already eyeing a fresh start. Others say he is committed to staying at South Carolina. And everyone seems to think they have the inside scoop on what is next for Sellers.
Head coach Shane Beamer addressed all of it head-on in his post-game press conference after the Gamecocks 31-30 loss to Texas A&M, and he didn't sugarcoat a thing.
When asked about the reports suggesting that Sellers is preparing to leave South Carolina, Beamer didn't hesitate.
“There’s a bunch of absolute horse garbage that’s on social media right now.”
Then a reporter pointed out that there were some posts claiming that Sellers is planning on staying, to which Beamer didn't miss a beat. “Hopefully, that’s not horse garbage.”
After the devastating loss, Sellers himself also was pressed on his future in Columbia. His answer was calm, measured, and honest. “When the time comes to make those decisions, it’s just going to be there. Everybody’s got decisions to make. But I mean, I plan on being here because I’m here right now.”
It's the kind of answer you would expect from a player evaluating two massive options: stay and fight for a rebound season or explore the portal.
Of course, the 2025 season has not helped the Gamecocks' QB1. Sellers has not played poor football; he has played behind an offense that never found its identity. So far this season, he’s completing 61.7% of his passes for 1,536 yards, seven touchdowns, and five interceptions. It’s a noticeable dip from last year’s production, when he accounted for over 3,200 total yards and 25 touchdowns total.
Sellers has not regressed. The system around him has.
South Carolina will close out their 2025 campaign against Coastal Carolina followed by Clemson at home.
