LaNorris Sellers' loyalty to South Carolina in the QB portal era makes him 1 of 1

The South Carolina Gamecocks have plenty of optimism surrounding the program entering the 2026 season. The Gamecocks finished 4-8 last season, but the return of star quarterback LaNorris Sellers paired with new offensive coordinator Kendall Briles has fans excited about the upcoming season. 

Sellers is not your typical college football quarterback. Of course, that includes his 6-foot-3, 240-pound frame with an ability to take off and run with speed that defies physics is one reason. But another is the fact that the quarterback is entering Year Four at South Carolina, and his third season as the Gamecocks' starting quarterback. 

Every season, especially in 2026, we see several big-name quarterbacks enter the college football transfer portal every year. This season, big schools like LSU, Miami and Indiana will be led by transfer portal quarterbacks in Sam Leavitt, Darian Mensah and Josh Hoover. 

At SEC Media Days in Tampa, Fla. on Tuesday, Sellers was asked plenty of questions about why he chose to stay at South Carolina. 

"It's just a matter of like starting over," Sellers said. "I built these relationships got to know these guys, these coaches and all that. There's no need for me to go somewhere else that's not home for me, where I can go for a year and, like you said, enter the portal. There's no point in that. Stay here, learn the system, be consistent with the system and these guys."

During another media appearance on ESPN's SportsCenter on Tuesday, he also talked about staying in South Carolina because it is home for him:

At South Carolina, Sellers will have plenty of comfortability with the guys he has returning this season. His leading receiver, Nyck Harbor, is back this season, as well as his starting running back Matt Fuller. 

The Gamecocks are also expected to get a big boost on the offensive line, thanks to big-time offensive tackle transfer Jacarrius Peak, who comes over from N.C. State. Peak surrendered just four sacks last season, which is great news for Sellers. The Gamecocks' signal-caller was sacked a career-high 43 times last season. 

Obviously no one has a crystal ball, so only time will tell if the hype surrounding Sellers entering this season will turn out to be real. But if Sellers chose to go elsewhere after last season's 4-8 season, it would drastically change the outlook of South Carolina's 2026 season, as well as head coach Shane Beamer's fate in Columbia. South Carolina fans can appreciate Sellers for sticking with the Gamecocks and being committed to the rebuild this offseason. 

Across his two seasons at South Carolina as a starter, Sellers has thrown for 5,057 yards with 33 touchdowns and 15 interceptions, adding another 995 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground. Sellers' 2026 season will likely be his last in Columbia. In recent mock drafts, he has been consistently projected as a first-rounder for 2026. It would be only fitting for his last year with the Gamecocks to be his best season yet in Columbia.
