South Carolina football may have gone 4-8 last season, but the Gamecocks are entering 2026 with some pretty hefty expectations. A big reason for that is thanks to returning star quarterback LaNorris Sellers. The Gamecock redshirt junior could have declared for the 2026 NFL Draft this offseason, but opted to return to Columbia.Â
It sounds like at least one college coach is utterly terrified of that fact. A recent anonymous college coach, in speaking with Athlon Sports, described Sellers as "an elite athlete," adding that the signal-caller is one of the strongest people the coach has ever seen:

"LaNorris Sellers is an elite athlete. He’s very hot and cold. If they can protect him but allow him to show his athleticism, they can be a legitimate problem.

The coach, whoever that might be, is not wrong. Sellers had a breakout season in 2024 as a redshirt freshman, throwing for 2,534 yards with 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also showcased his athleticism, rushing for 674 yards with seven interceptions.Â
His numbers digressed significantly last season, as he threw for just 2,437 yards with 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He rushed for a career-low 270 yards with five scores, and was sacked 43 times, which ranked 131st in the nation.Â
But there is a ton of optimism surrounding Sellers entering 2026. The Gamecocks re-tooled the offensive line this offseason, adding big-time transfer ports products like Jaccarius Peak and Emmanuel Poku. South Carolina also added running backs Christian Clark from the portal, and Sellers will get star tailback Matt Fuller back from, as well as his leading receiver Nyck Harbour.Â
Head coach Shane Beamer also hired new offensive coordinator Kendal Briles from TCU, as well as adding Stan Drayton and Randy Clements as assistants.Â
It sounds like even college coaches, anonymous or not, are taking notice of the potential Sellers has this season. If he has one of his best seasons in Columbia just yet, he could vault himself into the first round of the 2027 NFL Draft.
