There is plenty of excitement surrounding the South Carolina baseball program. Although the Gamecocks finished with a program-low 35 losses in 2026, Columbia is buzzing with the new hire of head coach Kevin Schnall.
On Friday evening, the new South Carolina skipper held his introductory press conference. He detailed what he hopes to accomplish at South Carolina, and was asked about his recruiting strategy. When asked about recruiting in-state players within the Palmetto State. His answer should make fans even more excited about the future.
"Ultimately we’re never going to settle for the next best player," Schnall said via Gamecock Central. "So, if that means we have to expand out, we will do that. The roster last year had 15 different states on it. The same thing at Coastal, we had to expand our wings and go coast to coast to go after the best student athletes in the entire country, but our number one priority would be dominating the state of South Carolina and making sure the best players in this state are Gamecocks.”
Schnall's track record recruiting within the state of South Carolina is no doubt impressive. He spent the last two seasons as the head coach at Coastal Carolina, after several seasons as an assistant there. The Chanticleers made it to the College World Series Final last season, falling short against LSU. Coastal also won the CWS in 2016 when Schnall was an assistant alongside head coach Gary Gilmore.
There's no question that Coastal Carolina has far less resources than what South Carolina has. So theoretically, Schnall should be able to recruit well in Columbia with a lot more leverage to use at his disposal.
Schnall has already flexed his recruiting muscles in recent days. He has already landed several Coastal players to follow him to South Carolina, as well as getting Gamecock stars in outfielder Tyler Bak and pitcher Cooper Parks to return in 2027.
We'll see how well Schnall can do recruiting-wise in the coming weeks and months. But it sounds like he has no problem both recruiting well in the state of South Carolina and beyond.
As a head coach at Coastal, Schnall finished with a 93-36 record, and he was named the Sun Belt Coach of the Year last season. This past season, the Chanticleers fell to Florida State in the Tallahassee Regional.
