The South Carolina Gamecocks are looking to rebound after getting off to an 0-2 start in SEC play. In back to back weeks against the Mississippi State Bulldogs, and Alabama Crimson Tide, South Carolina has looked lifeless and mistake-prone as the pressure builds for head coach Shane Beamer.
The Gamecocks will return home after going on the road to Tuscaloosa, set to face the Kentucky Wildcats, who enter the matchup 3-1. Kentucky’s three victories came over Youngstown State a road win over Texas A&M and last week’s 45-21 victory over South Alabama at home.
Let’s take a look at who the Gamecocks are facing in the Kentucky Wildcats.
Scouting the Kentucky Wildcats
Kentucky is led by first year head coach Will Stein, who joins the Wildcats after spending the last three seasons as Oregon’s offensive coordinator under head Coach Dan Lanning. His team earned a signature upset victory when the Wildcats went on the road and upset then No. 9 ranked Texas A&M 31-21 two weeks ago.
Like South Carolina, Kentucky also has a loss to Alabama,. But Kentucky’s Week 2 game against the Crimson Tide was much closer than South Carolina’s last week. In fact, Kentucky went to the locker room with a 17-13 lead before giving up 31 unanswered points in the second half to fall 45-17.
Kentucky Offense
Kentucky's offense ranks 51st nationally in scoring, putting up an average of 34.5 points per game. The unit is led by senior quarterback Kenny Minchey, who has thrown for 876 yards with eight touchdowns and just one interception. His best game came in Week 1 against Youngstown State, throwing for 301 yards with four touchdowns.
His leading receiver is Kenny Darby, who has 13 receptions for 226 yards with two touchdowns. The Wildcat run game is led by backs Jason Patterson and CJ Baxter, who have combined for 639 yards on the ground with another eight scores.
Kentucky Defense
Kentucky's defense is also middle-of-the pack statistically, checking in at 77th overall in total defense, and 88th in scoring defense, allowing 25 points per game.
Safety Jordan Castell is Kentucky's leading tackler, with 36 total tackles and two interceptions so far. Second on the team in tackling is linebacker Grant Godfrey, who has 33 total tackles with one sack, including one interception. The Wildcats' rush defense might be their strongest point, allowing just 122 yards on the ground per game.
The Gamecocks finished last week with 216 rush yards on the ground, so running the ball effectively will be key if the Gamecocks want a win on Saturday.
Shane Beamer is familiar with Coach Stein
Earlier this week, Beamer said that he knows Stein from when he was an assistant at Oklahoma from 2018-2020. At the time, Stein was a coach at Lake Travis High School.
"Every time I went by Lake Travis, I’d just would gravitate towards him and spent a lot of time sitting in his office," Beamer said of Stein via Gamecock Central. "And was really just blown away by you know his knowledge of football, offensive football schemes, and all that. Just a really good person that I enjoyed visiting with. So to see him now, in the position in Lexington, that’s pretty cool. I’m happy for him, and I know what that program means to him. He’s doing a great job in a short period of time."
Saturday's game between the Gamecocks and Wildcats will kick off at 4:15 p.m. and air live on SEC Network. South Carolina has won the last four straight meetings against the Wildcats, from 2022-2025.
