To say that South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer is entering a crucial season in 2026 is an understatement. Entering his sixth season in Columbia, Beamer is 33-30 overall as the Gamecocks' head coach.

Last season South Carolina finished 4-8, which was Beamer's worst finish with the Gamecocks' second to his 5-7 mark in 2023. So the big question for Beamer entering 2026 is, is he on the hot seat?

According to CBS Sports analyst and South Carolina alumnus Brad Crawford, that depends who you're asking.

“Well if you talk to Gamecock AD Jeremiah Donati, he'll deny deny deny that he's on the hot seat," Crawford said on a recent Outkick Hot Mic appearance. "But if this roster under Shane Beamer, considering what they did this offseason, they rebuilt the offensive line they paid so much to as you mentioned, get [LaNorris] Sellers [back], Dylan Stewart even Nyck Harbour's a guy that could have been a portal casualty.

"And he re-faced the offensive staff, got [offensive coordinator] Kendal Briles got a couple offensive line and running backs coaches. I think Shane Beamer knows that he needs to get to at least bowl season this fall.

"Last year after they finished 4-8, Beamer kind of made it his promise to get in the playoffs. I think that was kind of bold based on personnel. But South Carolina is a program where Beamer's going to make $8 million this season , that's Top 15 in the sport. You can’t have a year coming off of 4-8, where you finish outside the Top 25."

Here's a full video of what Crawford had to say:

Crawford makes a couple of great points here. First, South Carolina did an excellent job of both retaining talent and getting much-needed help from the transfer portal, including big names like offensive tackle Jaccarius Peak and offensive lineman Emmanuel Poki. That, paired with hiring Kendal Briles and new offensive line coach Randy Clements, who was also with Briles at TCU, and Stan Drayton as the new running backs coach.

Following a 4-8 season, for a coach that's making $8 million a year, bowl season is the bare minimum. Crawford's latest bowl projections has the Gamecocks playing in the Texas Bowl this year.

Shane Beamer contract details

Beamer signed a new contract with South Carolina in Jan. 2025, following a 9-4 finish in 2024. The deal bumped his annual salary to $8.15 million annually, and went through the 2030 season.

Per the USA Today's coaching salary database, Beamer's buyout as of Dec. of last year was $27,903,958. So that number is likely slightly lower entering the 2026 season.
