When MiLaysia Fulwiley posted a new photo in her LSU jersey, she didn't just make a splash, she reopened the floodgate of emotion from Gamecock Nation. The Columbia native and former South Carolina star recently shared an Instagram post proudly rocking her new LSU jersey with the caption: “glad that i been through a lot it made me ah monster 👹...... year 3 otw💫.” And while Fulwiley received a ton of hype, likes, and comments from LSU fans, there was a little bit of static. Why? Well, because the heartbreak is still a little fresh back home in Columbia, SC.
One South Carolina fan summed it up with an iconic and humorous comment on the post: “I rebuke this in the name of Dawn Staley.” Another fan mourned: “I can’t believe Jesus, I still can’t believe it Jesus… thought I was ova dis! 😭😭😭😭😭😭”
From sadness to sarcasm, here's how Gamecock fans are feeling seeing one of their own in purple and gold instead of garnet and black:
- “Definitely retriggered me!”
- “Every time I see LSU on ya body my chest gets tight as hell, but best of luck, Lay!”
- “I HATE LSU BUT I LOVE YOU WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO ME”
- “You looked better in Garnet & Black. Gamecocks forever ❤️🖤❤️🖤!!!”
- “Good luck Lay, gonna miss you in the packed-out house in Columbia.”
- “You won a championship with South Carolina 😔 good luck with LSU can’t wait to see you ball out tho 👍🏼”
Even WNBA rookie and Fulwiley's former Gamecock teammate Bree Hall chimed in on the post with a sentimental and sad Steve Carell GIF, which seemed to sum up what many of us feel: proud, but still not over it.
The post drew in love from fans from different fanbases, with several of Fulwiley's teammates dropping supportive messages. After all, greats support greats, no matter the color of the uniform.
Fulwiley officially announced her transfer to LSU after speculation in April. She had a standout season with the Gamecocks last year, and while her new chapter is just beginning, her place in Gamecock history is permanent.
