The Gamecocks came up short in the recruitment of one of their top 2026 defensive targets. Four-star defensive tackle PJ Dean has announced his commitment to the University of Georgia, choosing the Bulldogs over finalists South Carolina and Ohio State. The news was first reported by Marc Pruitt of the Winston-Salem Journal and confirmed via social media on Monday afternoon.

Dean, a 6-foot-3, 255-pound standout from West Forsyth High School in Clemmons, North Carolina, had been heavily pursued by the Gamecocks. South Carolina was originally recruiting Dean as an offensive lineman but had switched to the defensive side of the ball. When Dean made it clear he wanted to play defense, the staff adjusted easily. Defensive line coach Travian Robertson stepped in to lead the pursuit, and Dean left his Columbia feeling strongly about the program during his visit.

Dean had previously told reporters that he felt comfortable in Columbia and praised the program for its authenticity.

Still, in the end, Georgia's pedigree in producing defensive line talent seemed to have sealed the deal. Dean's commitment is a tough blow for South Carolina, which is still looking to round out their 2026 defensive line class. He would have made a strong pairing with Newberry, SC four-star commit Jamel Howse, who remains solid to the Gamecocks.

South Carolina will now shift their focus to other targets at that position, but Deans's decision stings, especially considering the strong relationships that were built along the way. Gamecock Nation wishes Dean the best in Athens.
