The South Carolina Gamecocks football program, including head coach Shane Beamer and his staff, are wrapping up a busy recruiting weekend. The Gamecocks hosted a number of blue-chip recruits on campus, including five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson, four-star safety Davion Jones and offensive tackle Nate Carson.Â
Also on-campus in Columbia was four-star defensive lineman Marquis Evans, who is from Birmingham, Ala. The Spain Park prospect had high praise for his visit with the Gamecocks, and told Gamecock Central he felt quite valued, despite the number of big-name prospects who were also visiting.Â
"They put a premium on me," Evans told Gamecock Central of his visit. They made sure I was a priority and I already knew it was going to be [like] because of how many times I'd been down there, how close they kept the relationship all this time."
Evans does not have a set decision date just yet, but he added to the outlet that he could decide sometime this week. He added in the interview that his visit was the fifth or sixth time on-campus at South Carolina, so the comfortability is there.
The defensive lineman is rated by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 39 player in his position group, and the No. 17 ranked player from his home state of Alabama. He has been having quite the busy summer, taking visits to several schools in recent weeks. He visited Tennessee on May 22, followed up with a visit to Miami on the 29th. So far in June, he has visited Auburn, Florida and was with the Gamecocks this past weekend.Â
His 247Sports page for those schools lists his interests as "warm." His Rivals page has logged a prediction for Evans, with a 93% chance of him landing at in-state Auburn. The site gives the Gamecocks with a 2% chance to land him, but that might be changing slightly after his visit with South Carolina.Â
South Carolina's 2027 class does not have a defensive lineman in its class, so Evans would fill a big need for Coach Beamer and company. The class currently ranks 66th nationally. Getting a prospect like Evans added would shoot that number up tremendously.Â
Per MaxPreps, Evans had 28 total tackles last season with six sacks for Minor High School. He transferred to Spain Park this offseason, where he'll play his senior season.
We'll see if the Gamecocks' visit with Evans was enough to land a commitment from the talented Alabama prospect.
