Following South Carolina’s commanding 90-49 victory over Texas A&M on January 9, 2025, head coach Dawn Staley addressed the media, highlighting several key aspects of her team’s performance and future outlook.

Staley expressed satisfaction with the Gamecocks’ improved tempo and fluidity, noting their emphasis on a strong start. She praised the contributions from players across the roster, emphasizing the importance of depth and experience:

“We wanted to get off to a quicker start, better start, and we did for the most part. I thought certain people that we put in the game came in and impacted it, no matter how much time or how little time. We’re just working towards elevating the end of our bench.”

Addressing the team’s defensive efforts, Staley highlighted their preparedness for Texas A&M’s physical play:

“I think we were locked in, and we understood that they’re a very physical defensive team. They cut your vision down; they make it hard for you to make catches. Most teams that play that style, if you give it back to them, it can cause some disruption.”

With forward Ashlyn Watkins sidelined due to a season-ending injury, Staley commended the efforts of other post players stepping up in her absence:

“I did [like what I saw]. It’s going to be similar to that. Probably could have gotten Sakima in the game a little bit sooner because she’s just more experienced. But she’s been out, and Adhels has been working her butt off. So I wanted to give her the nod.”

Freshman Joyce Edwards delivered a standout performance, scoring 19 points off the bench. Staley acknowledged Edwards’ significant impact:

“Joyce is coming along. She’s elevating her game, and it’s showing on the court. Her contributions are invaluable, especially as we navigate through injuries.”

Looking ahead, South Carolina faces a demanding schedule with five consecutive games against ranked opponents. Staley conveyed confidence in her team’s readiness:

“I like where we are. I’m not fretting the five games in 16 days at all. Our team is prepared to play. Win, lose, or draw, we’re gonna play hard; we’re gonna give our best effort. It’s going to be a battle, and we look forward to the battle.”

The Gamecocks’ victory over Texas A&M marked their 50th consecutive SEC win, underscoring the program’s sustained excellence under Staley’s leadership. As they prepare for the challenging slate ahead, the team’s depth, defensive prowess, and resilience will be pivotal in maintaining their winning trajectory.
