Last season, On3 engaged college football fans on X (formerly Twitter) to identify the season's most egregious officiating errors. The initiative garnered nearly 300,000 views and over 250 comments, leading to a compilation of the top 10 worst calls. The list emphasizes decisions made during games that significantly impacted outcomes, rather than missed calls, and the South Carolina vs. LSU game nearly topped the list at #2.
In mid-September 2024, during a closely contested game between the South Carolina Gamecocks and the LSU Tigers, a pivotal moment occurred with 6:15 remaining in the fourth quarter. LSU's quarterback, Garrett Nussmeier, attempted a pass that was intercepted by South Carolina defensive back Nick Emmanwori, who returned it 100 yards for a touchdown.
However, the celebration was short-lived. Officials flagged South Carolina EDGE rusher Kyle Kennard for unnecessary roughness, citing a shove to Nussmeier during the return. This personal foul nullified the touchdown, and while the interception stood, the Gamecocks' offense was forced to start deep in their own territory at the 10-yard line.
Unfortunately, this is only one of several frustrating and questionable calls. During a critical drive, South Carolina quarterback Robby Ashford connected with Dalevon Campbell on a deep pass. However, the play was nullified by an offensive pass interference penalty against receiver Mazeo Bennett, who appeared to be inadvertently contacted by an LSU defender away from the ball.
This controversial call negated a significant gain, pushing the Gamecocks out of field goal range. Subsequently, South Carolina's drive stalled, culminating in a fumble just a few plays later. Commentators Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit expressed their disbelief regarding the penalty.
The accumulation of 13 penalties totaling 123 yards severely hindered the Gamecocks' momentum and contributed to their narrow 36-33 defeat. Head coach Shane Beamer expressed his frustration post-game, acknowledging that such self-inflicted mistakes are detrimental, especially in closely fought contests.
This loss not only impacted South Carolina's season record but also had broader implications for their postseason aspirations, highlighting how critical moments and officiating decisions can profoundly influence the trajectory of a team's season.
