The 2026 NFL Draft concluded on Saturday, and the South Carolina Gamecocks saw just three players drafted in cornerback Brandon Cisse to the Packers, defensive tackle Nick Barrett to the Chargers and safety Jalon Kilgore to the Buffalo Bills.Â
The Bills managed to land Kilgore in the fifth round of the draft, considered to be a steal for Buffalo's defense. Speaking with reporters after the NFL draft, Buffalo GM spoke to reporters about what the Bills see in Kilgore, and how he will be utilized on defense.Â
"Jalon was another guy we really liked, and we had a pretty good value," Beane said via The Big Spur. "We sent [Bills secondary coach] Joe Danna down to work him out and spend some time with him. Very familiar with that program. Know Shane Beamer very well. I actually called Shane again this morning on my way in. Just wanted to run through him one more time. He was going back through some stuff that I didn't even remember. Maybe I had heard before. Played at a high school where he was the best player on the team.Â

"Played quarterback, punt returner," Beane continued. Just get the ball in his hands. Did some punt return there. He mentioned that he had a muff or two, but he said in fairness to him, he wasn't the main guy. We sometimes threw him back there, we probably didn't give him the reps. That's something else that we would potentially look at for him."
The Bills general manager added that in Buffalo Kilgore will likely play safety first, although he does have experience playing nickel as well.Â
"He's a safety first," Bean said. "Played a hybrid, star, nickel position there. Their plan if he came back was to move him to safety and that is why we sent Joe Danna down just to do the safety stuff and talk to him. That's where he will transition to."
Kilgore is expected to start rookie minicamp with the Bills sometime early next month.Â
