Dawn Staley, the legendary head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks women's basketball team, has built a lasting legacy in filled with historic achievements both on and off the court. And now she is tackling yet another noteworthy accomplishment.
As a college athlete herself, Staley was a standout force on the court. She earned NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player award and was named Naismith College Player of the Year twice. Staley was selected in the first round of the WNBA Draft by the Charlotte Sting and became a six-time WNBA All-Star player. Her impact on the league also earned her spots on both the WNBA's 10th and 15th Anniversary Team.
Staleys coaching career has been just as impressive. Since she took over the South Carolina program in the 2008-09 season, Staley has turned the Gamecocks into a national powerhouse.
It wasn't easy, especially in the beginning, as her team posted a 42-48 record over Staley's first three seasons at the helm. Since then, she has guided the Gamecocks to 13 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, five straight Final Four berths, and three National Championships, including a flawless 38-0 season in the 2023-24 season. Last year's squad finished 35-4 and came up just short of another national title against UConn.
Staley's influence as head coach has earned her in both the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame. Yet, the most recent milestone in her life and career may be the most personal yet.
On April 15, 2025, Staley announced the official release of her new book, Uncommon Favor, via social media:
