3 biggest takeaways from South Carolina's 2025 football schedule
With the regular season officially in the books and the College Football Playoff on the brink of starting, teams that didn't make the CFP need something to look forward to other than their bowl game if they made it to one.
The SEC released the 2025 schedules for all 16 teams, and South Carolina has a very similar schedule to their 2024 season. Other than their non-conference opponents, the Gamecocks will play the same SEC schedule this season, with the games in different order and different game sites.
So, with the schedule officially out, let's take a look at the three biggest takeaways for the South Carolina Gamecocks.
Opening the season against Virginia Tech
Shane Beamer has a long history with Virginia Tech that ties back to his father, Frank Beamer, who was the head coach of the Hokies for 28 years. Shane himself got his start at Virginia Tech when he played there from 1995 to 1999 and was also a coach at Virginia Tech from 2011 to 2015.
Beamer made statements about playing Virginia Tech next season after the Gamecocks didn't make it into the College Football Playoff, which probably surprised some people. With the Gamecocks not making the playoffs, Beamer felt that South Carolina got snubbed because of who they played. Beamer said that if teams want to get into the CFP, they shouldn't play out-of-conference games, saying that it was nothing against Virginia Tech, but they didn't bolster the Gamecocks resume.
So, with what feels like a family reunion to start off the season, this game could have a lot weighing on it, especially if the Gamecocks want to start the season off strong for their campaign for the CFP.
South Carolina has seven home games
The Gamecocks will get very comfortable playing in Williams-Brice Stadium in 2025, with seven home games on their schedule. Technically it looks like the Gamecocks have eight, when the Gamecocks play Virginia Tech in the Aflac Kickoff in Atlanta, Georgia to start the season, they will be the home team.
This season, South Carolina will have some very big games at home, including their matchups against Alabama, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and, best of all, Clemson. Playing some of the biggest matchups at home with the home crowd behind them will be big for this team.
Games at LSU, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M
On the flip side of things, South Carolina will have to travel to three very hostile environments to play. Playing at Tiger Stadium, Vaught Hemingway Stadium, and Kyle Field are three extremely tough places to play, especially if any of these are night games.
These are also three teams that were all in contention for the College Football Playoff this year and seem to be every year. Wins at even two of these three places would be huge, but if South Carolina came to walk away with wins from all these of these hostile environments, the Gamecocks just might be able to book their ticket to the playoff.
