South Carolina Football: Gamecock receiver joining the transfer portal parade
By Kevin Miller
South Carolina football has seen a number of players elect to put their names in the transfer portal. Linebacker/EDGE Donovan Westmoreland was the first to have his name come out, and quarterbacks Tanner Bailey and Colten Gauthier followed.
Things ramped up on Thursday with a few more transfer names coming to light.
News came out in the morning that Juice Wells would be transferring. Based on his social media activity, NIL is a major factor. After missing most of the 2023 season, the former all-SEC wideout will be transferring as a graduate student.
Then, around lunchtime, record-setting kicker Mitch Jeter was also reported as a transfer portal entrant. The owner of the best field goal percentage in program history will also be a graduate transfer.
Another early afternoon addition to the transfer portal discussion came courtesy of a report from GamecockCentral’s Mike Uva. According to Uva (who also broke the Mitch Jeter news earlier in the day), wide receiver Landon Samson will be exiting the South Carolina football program.
Samson, a former high school All-American, has not seen much action in his two seasons as a Gamecock but has dealt with some undisclosed off-the-field, non-disciplinary issues that have kept him away from the team at times.
Samson joins Juice Wells as receivers who have decided to leave the program through the transfer portal. They are the 5th and 6th receivers so far who have left the program this offseason as Xavier Legette, Eddie Lewis, Ahmarean Brown, and Ben Rollins all graduated. Rollins, a walk-on, could return but walked on Senior Night last weekend against Clemson.
On the other side of the portal, the Gamecocks have dispensed a handful of offers to graduate transfer players (graduate students can enter the portal and transfer at any time). Once the portal opens next week, underclassmen can officially enter the portal and announce their transfer destinations.
