South Carolina Football: Gamecock commitment flying up the recruiting rankings
By Kevin Miller
South Carolina football has a really nice recruiting class coming to Columbia in the class of 2024. 5-star EDGE Dylan Stewart and 5-star offensive tackle Josiah Thompson headline a class that has 14 of its 15 commitments rated 4 stars or better by at least one major recruiting service.
One of the biggest risers of the bunch is running back Matthew Fuller from Wayne County High School in Jesup, Georgia. Already a 4-star prospect according to both ESPN and On3, Fuller received a nice boost up the rankings. He received an 87-spot bump, bringing his On3 ranking from 227 to 140. He was one of the biggest movers in On3’s latest rankings update.
247Sports has Fuller rated as a 3-star player, but he has a grade of 89, which is just under the 90-point threshold for 4-star status. Rivals is lower on Fuller as a prospect but has not updated his ranking in some time, either.
Fuller finished his high school season a couple of weeks ago as Wayne County fell in the Georgia State Playoffs, but he still is 4th in the state in total rushing yards. Every player above him in yards on the ground played in more games due to deeper playoff runs.
He possesses plus-speed for a running back, logging 100-meter track times in the sub-11 range. He is also a tough and physical runner. He displays that toughness on defense, as well, where he has spent some time at linebacker and as a hard-hitting safety.
Fuller will step into a running back room with the South Carolina football program that is in need of players. Mario Anderson has one more year of eligibility but could test the NFL waters, and the only other scholarship back who could return is true freshman Djay Braswell.
The Gamecocks are almost guaranteed to bring in a veteran back via the transfer portal (especially if Anderson leaves), and running backs coach Montario Hardesty is hoping to bring in another high school back. 4-star Daniel Hill (deciding between South Carolina, Alabama, and Tennessee) is announcing his commitment at the All-American Bowl in January.
Fuller and any other back that the Gamecocks bring in will have an opportunity to play early.
