South Carolina basketball is off to the best start of any team in the sport of women’s college basketball. The Gamecocks are 2-0 with two 100-point performances in two top-15 victories over Notre Dame and Maryland.

What should make the rest of the country so nervous is that only center Kamilla Cardoso is completely out of eligibility after this season. In fact, six Gamecocks are just freshmen and sophomores.

The future is bright for Dawn Staley’s South Carolina basketball program, and it could be getting brighter.

Two 5-star prospects joined the program with signed National Letters of Intent last week when point guard Madisen McDaniel and post player Adhel Tac made their Columbia-bound futures official. Now, with an announcement from one of the top players in the country, there could be another future superstar joining them.

On Monday, it was announced that Camden, South Carolina native Joyce Edwards would be making her college decision public on Wednesday.

Edwards has an official top-3 of South Carolina, LSU, and Clemson, but it is widely believed that the Gamecocks are the favorite to land the talented forward, LSU has an outside shot at her commitment, and Clemson is a distant third in her recruitment.

Depending on which recruiting service one checks, Edwards is either the #1 or #2 prospect in the class of 2024. She and forward Sarah Strong have taken turns as the nation’s top recruit over the past several years. Currently, Edwards is #2 according to both ESPN’s HoopGurlz and Prospects Nation.

The versatile forward can score down low and on the perimeter, and she is a plus-athlete who can defend any position on the floor with excellence. At 6’3″, she is tall enough to get real minutes in the post at the next level, but with her skillset, athleticism, and ballhandling ability, she will be a matchup nightmare when she operates from the perimeter.

If Edwards chooses South Carolina basketball, the Gamecocks will challenge for the top spot in the team recruiting rankings.
