OBSERVATIONS

  • Starters: Te-Hina Paopao-Raven Johnson-Bree Hall-Chloe Kitts-Kamilla Cardoso
  • Tessa Johnson and Ashlyn Watkins were very active on defense. Johnson had 3 steals, and Watkins had 3 blocks in the 1st half.
  • The Carolina perimeter defense wasn’t good enough early; Maryland made 7 shots in the first 16 minutes of the game. Things got much better toward the end of the 2nd quarter, forcing 5 turnovers from Maryland point guard Shyanne Sellers.
  • Kamilla Cardoso struggled to get anything going in the 1st half. She only took 4 shots, but when things weren’t going well offensively, she still impacted the game in other ways, adding 4 rebounds and a block.
  • Te-Hina Paopao is deadly from outside the arc.
  • Chloe Kitts had her best half of basketball in garnet and black, scoring 8 points, grabbing 5 rebounds, and adding a block and a steal. She missed one shot from the field.
  • MiLaysia Fulwiley only played 4 minutes in the 1st half due to foul trouble, but she scored 6 points, dished an assist, and picked up a steal.
  • The 2nd half Gamecocks were a different animal. The defense picked up, the offense was crisper, and the rebounding was more aggressive.
  • Chloe Kitts followed up her big-time 1st half with a nice 2nd. She finished the game with career highs in points (13) and rebounds (10).
  • With how well Kitts, Watkins, Paopao, Johnson, and Johnson played, Cardoso and Fulwiley played significantly fewer minutes than normal in the 2nd half.
  • The Gamecocks had a season-high of 10 made 3-pointers last season, and that was well above their usual average of 4. On Sunday, USC knocked down 12.
