South Carolina Football: Gamecock in-state flip target wins Region Player of the Year honor
By Kevin Miller
South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer and his staff are trying to put the finishing touches on a good 2024 recruiting class.
For just the second time in the modern recruiting era, the Gamecocks appear set to sign two 5-star players in the cycle (EDGE Dylan Stewart and offensive tackle Josiah Thompson), and despite the low overall numbers in the class, USC still ranks in the top-20 nationally in recruiting.
Several of the remaining targets on the South Carolina football recruiting board are currently committed to other schools. Flip candidates like 4-star EDGE Kameryn Fountain (Southern Cal) and 4-star wide receiver Braylon Staley (Tennessee) are worth monitoring, but another player might be the most likely flip in the class.
Marion, South Carolina native and current Kentucky Wildcat pledge Quaysheed Scott is a 3-star athlete who has a tremendous upside. As a running back, wide receiver, and defensive back at Marion High School, Scott has some really impressive tape built on good acceleration to top-end speed and an aggressive play style.
This week, it was announced that Scott was named the Region 8-AA Player of the Year.
Scott is most likely to be a secondary player in college, and it is believed that the Gamecocks are recruiting him as such.
Kentucky and South Carolina are his only Power 5 offers, and Scott is related to former Gamecock corner Cam Smith and current Carolina defensive tackle TJ Sanders. If any program would have the ability to flip Scott, it would have to be the in-state Gamecocks.
South Carolina football already has 4-star safety Kelvin Hunter, 4-star cornerback Braydon Lee, and 4-star athlete/cornerback Jalewis Solomon committed in the class, and 4-star athlete Zy’marion Lang and 3-star linebacker/safety David Bucey are commitments who could end up in the secondary room in Columbia.
The Gamecocks seem to desire to add at least one more DB into the fold as they will lose major contributors Marcellas Dial and David Spaulding and three more depth pieces from the secondary to graduation.
Quaysheed Scott would fit perfectly into the mold of a versatile, fast defensive back who could be added to the South Carolina football recruiting class.
