South Carolina Football: Recent Auburn decommit visiting campus this weekend
By Kevin Miller
South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer and his staff were really close to securing a commitment from 4-star athlete Jalewis Solomon back in August. The wide receiver/defensive back hybrid, instead, made a pledge to Hugh Freeze and the Auburn Tigers. Earlier this week, Solomon backed off of that commitment.
Because the South Carolina football program was the other school in Solomon’s top-2 at the time of his commitment, many believe that the Gamecocks are the new favorite to land the supremely talented Georgia native.
That belief has only grown in recent days as Solomon announced that he would be making his way to Columbia this weekend for a visit for the South Carolina-Florida game.
As a player, Solomon could develop into an SEC-caliber wide receiver or defensive back. He had primarily been recruited as a corner by most of the teams in the running for his services, so that seems to be his most likely positional destination.
Solomon is a bit polarizing as a prospect as On3 and 247Sports have him rated as a 3-star prospect, and ESPN and Rivals rank him with 4 stars. In fact, Rivals has Solomon ranked in the top-100 nationally.
Based on the teams that were in the running for him late in the recruiting process (South Carolina, Auburn, Florida State, Kentucky, and Texas A&M), it would seem like the college football coaching world sides more with Rivals’ assessment of the Schley County High School product.
Auburn doesn’t appear to be out of things completely. Solomon’s older brother plays on the defensive line for the Tigers, and his younger brother (5-star class of 2025 linebacker Zayden Walker) is considering Auburn, as well. Florida State was the leader for a time during his recruitment, as well, so the Seminoles are also a team to watch for Solomon.
For South Carolina football fans, the hope is that quarterback commitment Dante Reno was correct when he hinted at some possible flips going the Gamecocks’ way. After all, it is #FlipSZN. A Solomon flip from Auburn to Carolina could go a long way for a USC secondary that will be losing several talented players over the next two seasons.
Solomon will be on campus at the same time as 2025 targets Ryan Montgomery (4-star quarterback) and Marshall Pritchett (3-star tight end), fellow 2024 flip candidate Kameryn Fountain (4-star EDGE; Southern Cal commitment), and a number of other recruits.
