SEC Football Quarterback Power Rankings:
No. 12 Mississippi State’ Will Rogers
If an SEC football fan only watched Mississippi State play South Carolina this year, Will Rogers’ 12th-place spot in these power rankings would seem far too low. However, the game against USC was Rogers’ only good performance of the season, and most of his production came in exploiting the matchup between Tulu Griffin and the Gamecocks’ nickels.
Other than finding Griffin for over 250 yards against Carolina, Rogers has thrown for just 800 yards across five games. He’s also a statue in the pocket, offering virtually no scramble ability to help supplement the run game. Backup Mike Wright brings some athleticism to the table, but he has only been trusted to throw the ball once all season.
Rogers has an outside chance of breaking the SEC football all-time passing yardage record, but based on his struggles in 2023, it seems he was more of a product of Mike Leach’s air raid system than quarterback proficiency.
Rogers is in danger of losing his starting job to Wright who has experience as a part-time starter during his career at Vanerbilt. A turnaround, while unlikely, wouldn’t come as a complete surprise due to Rogers’ track record of success. However, up to this point, it isn’t up for debate that the senior signal-caller has been a bottom-three quarterback in the SEC.
