South Carolina Football: Juice Wells officially “out” this weekend and other injury updates
By Kevin Miller
On Tuesday, South Carolina football head coach Shane Beamer spoke to the media for his weekly press conference.
In addition to the usual “coach speak” about playing a talented opponent and his team’s need for solid execution to get an SEC road win, Beamer also gave some updates on the Gamecocks’ injury situation heading into this weekend’s matchup with the Tennessee Volunteers.
The offensive line is the most banged-up position group on the team, something that makes life more difficult for a Gamecock offense that had its first good performance this past Saturday against Mississippi State.
Beamer announced that Ni Mansell, a reserve interior lineman, will miss the season. Ryan Brubaker, who had previously been called out for “long-term,” was also revealed to be out for the rest of the year. They join 4-star freshman Markee Anderson as interior offensive linemen who will not play in 2023.
Nothing has changed in the way that Beamer referred to offensive tackle Jaylen Nichols. Beamer still calls Nichols’ injury “long-term,” holding out hope that the big man can return at some point. Reserve Chase Sweigert and week 1 starting right tackle Cason Henry are out for right now. Part-time starter at right guard Jakai Moore has a hurt shoulder but is expected to play against the Vols.
Beamer said that defensive back David Spaulding is “fine” after battling some minor ailments against Mississippi State. He also used the same designation for cornerback O’Donnell Fortune but backtracked a bit by adding “unless something changes” with Fortune’s “banged-up knee.”
The South Carolina football headman addressed his two injured receivers, as well. Juice Wells “is out” this weekend, as expected. Ahmarean Brown is believed to be “back” as he practiced on Tuesday.
Reserve running back Bradley Dunn will be out this weekend, as well.
