The South Carolina football program no longer retires numbers for fear of running out of numbers for the players still on the team. However, the Gamecocks have started to retire the jerseys of the top USC players of all-time.
Last season marked the first jersey retirement in this modern system, and the #7 of Jadeveon Clowney now sits on the facade of the pressbox at Williams-Brice Stadium next to the retired numbers of George Rogers (38), Sterling Sharpe (2), Steve Wadiak (37), and Mike Johnson (56).
Jeffery was an All-American in garnet and black and put up one of the best receiver seasons in SEC history in 2010 as a sophomore. He went on to become a 2nd round pick of the Chicago Bears in the 2012 NFL Draft and played for nine seasons in the league. He won a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles.
A South Carolina native, Alshon Jeffery was part of the famed 2009 recruiting class that started a movement of in-state talents electing to stay home and play for the Gamecocks. South Carolina football would go on to win 11 games in three straight seasons from 2011-2013 for the greatest run of success in program history.
