South Carolina football recruiting got a boost earlier this week when 4-star offensive lineman commitment Josiah Thompson became 5-star offensive lineman commitment Josiah Thompson after a ratings bump from On3.
The Gamecocks are ranked lower in the team recruiting rankings than the quality of players in the class. Carolina has just 15 commitments in the class right now, bringing their overall ranking down around 20th. However, USC sits at 11th in average recruit player rating according to both On3 and 247Sports.
This means that the South Carolina football coaching staff are bringing in some big-time talents in the class of 2024.
Another player that the Gamecocks are hoping to add to the class is 4-star Georgia athlete Kamron Mikell. On Tuesday, Mikell announced his top-6 schools, and South Carolina, as expected, made the cut.
Mikell’s top-6 includes South Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky, Colorado, Tennessee, and Texas A&M.
In the early goings of Mikell’s recruitment, South Carolina football and the Georgia Bulldogs were viewed as the favorites to land the talented athlete. Georgia, being his home-state program, were believed to have the edge.
Now, though UGA still appears to be the favorite to land the 6’0″ athlete, his recruitment seems more open.
Mikell is one of the fastest players in the class of 2024. He has been clocked in game action sprinting over 22 miles per hour. He has the skills and athleticism to play wide receiver or defensive back at the college level and has shown preferences toward both sides of the football at different points of his recruitment.
For Statesboro High School, the consensus 4-star prospect has displayed his big-time athleticism and diverse skillset by playing all over the field as a defensive back, wide receiver, quarterback, and running back. On3 has recently ranked Mikell as a cornerback, while 247Sports, Rivals, and ESPN still have him ranked as an athlete.
