South Carolina Football: Shane Beamer updates injuries, including one season-ender
By Kevin Miller
Shane Beamer’s South Carolina football squad put forth a solid effort on Saturday against the #1-ranked Georgia Bulldogs in Athens, but the two-time defending national champs were able to come back from a 14-3 halftime deficit to knock off the visiting Gamecocks.
The game provides some important injury news for the team as the already-beat-up South Carolina football roster came out of the clash with the ‘Dawgs with even more ailments.
On Sunday, during his weekly teleconference, Coach Beamer provided some updates on the health of his football team.
The first injury many wanted to be addressed was the one to star wide receiver Juice Wells. Wells had battled a foot injury for part of the offseason and the first couple weeks of the regular season before going down after scoring a touchdown against Georgia this Saturday.
According to Beamer, the Gamecocks do not expect Wells’ injury to cause him to miss the entire season. During an in-game update on Saturday, the head coach said the USC medical staff believed the injury was a “broken bone” in Wells’ foot. He will see a specialist this week to get a better gauge on his injury.
Other than Wells, no South Carolina football player has had an injury reported from Saturday’s game.
Beamer updated the status of several previously-injured Gamecocks, however.
Freshman offensive lineman Markee Anderson will miss the rest of the 2023 season as he will have surgery on his knee. The big man from Dorman High School does not have a major issue like an ACL tear but needs to have a procedure done to get back to full health for next season.
Beamer said that wide receiver Ahmarean Brown, defensive end Tyreek Johnson, and defensive end JT Geer are hopeful to be back this week for the Gamecocks’ matchup with Mississippi State in Columbia. None of the three players traveled with the team to Athens this weekend.
Offensive linemen Cason Henry, Jaylen Nichols, and Ryan Brubaker will remain sidelined with their injuries.
