South Carolina football wide receiver Juice Wells has been banged up since the end of the summer with a foot/toe injury (one that Shane Beamer revealed today required surgery). He has been extremely limited so far in 2023, playing sparingly against North Carolina and Furman in the first two weeks of the season.

On the first offensive drive for the Gamecocks, Wells looked great. He caught a couple of passes and looked really good moving around, especially on a 17-yard catch-and-run on a screen pass that he took in for a touchdown.

However, after the play ended, Wells began to limp. By the time Georgia was halfway through the next offensive drive, Juice was on the way to the locker room, riding on the back of a golf cart after being unable to put any weight on his left foot.

During a break in the action, South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer was interviewed and asked about Wells’ injury.

Beamer responded frankly. “He’s done right now,” said the Gamecock headman. He then went on to provide some more details, saying that Wells was dealing with what they thought was a “broken bone” in his foot. Beamer shared that the injury was to the same foot that Wells had hurt this offseason. He even said that he had surgery on the foot and that a screw had been placed in it.

Wells’ absence is a big blow to a South Carolina offense that needs every weapon possible to play well in order to beat Georgia. In the immediate aftermath, O’Mega Blake seemed to be the benefactor of more playing time at the wide receiver position.

When Wells left the game, South Carolina football led the Georgia Bulldogs by a score of 7-0, and Georgia was only able to cut the lead to 7-3 by the end of the first quarter.
