Sherrod Greene spent more time in garnet and black than almost any player to ever wear a South Carolina football uniform. The linebacker spent six years as a Gamecock from 2017-2022. He committed to the Gamecocks before Will Muschamp ever coached a game at USC (summer of 2016) and stuck around long enough to play two seasons for Shane Beamer.

#44 battled several major injuries during his career as a Gamecock, but the South Carolina football captain still was afforded a brief NFL opportunity after exhausting all of his eligibility (including four seasons, a redshirt, and the “Covid redshirt”). Greene spent a short time with the New York Jets during training camp before being released prior to the NFL preseason.

Now, Sherrod Greene is getting another chance to play professional football.

This week, Greene was signed by the Ottawa Redblacks of the Canadian Football League to a multi-year contract. The contract will keep Greene on the Redblack roster for the rest of the 2023 season and the entire 2024 campaign, while the deal also includes an option for 2025. The linebacker is the only former South Carolina Gamecock on the Ottawa roster. He is expected to play primarily as an outside linebacker for the Redblacks.

During Sherrod Greene’s South Carolina football career, he started 27 games and finished his tenure with over 200 tackles. His healthiest and most productive season came in his super senior season. Greene tallied 76 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and an interception despite still missing one game with injury.

Arguably his most famous moment playing for the Gamecocks came in a rained-soaked contest against the Missouri Tigers in Williams-Brice Stadium in 2018. In the torrential downpour, Greene picked off an errant screen pass from Mizzou quarterback Drew Locke and waltzed into the end zone for a huge touchdown in a contest the Gamecocks wound up winning by just two points.
