Shane Beamer’s South Carolina football squad bounced back from their week 1 defeat to North Carolina with a convincing win over a very good FCS program in the in-state Furman Paladins.

After a slow start to the game that saw the Greenville-based FCS unit leading their in-state big brothers 14-7, the Gamecocks rode elite quarterback play and dominant 2nd and 3rd quarters to defeat Furman 47-21.

Unfortunately, just like in week 1 against North Carolina, injuries were a topic of discussion after the game.

Several players did not play in the game. Offensive linemen Jaylen Nichols, Ryan Brubaker, Markee Anderson, and Cason Henry were all sidelined, and they were joined by defensive backs Nick Emmanwori and David Spaulding, defensive end Jatius Geer, and linebacker Mo Kaba.

Star wide receiver Juice Wells played, but he was clearly limited as he played only sparingly. He was not listed on Coach Beamer’s injury report for this week, but some gamesmanship certainly has been at play with the handling of Wells’ injury in the media. His true status moving forward is unknown.

In the game against Furman, some new injuries popped up.

During Beamer’s teleconference on Sunday, he referred to several players as questionable and several others as probable for South Carolina football’s game with the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens next Saturday.

Wide receiver Ahmarean Brown left the game against Furman with what looked like a serious leg injury, but according to Beamer, it was just a mild hamstring issue, and that he might play against Georgia. He is questionable.

Defensive end Drew Tuazama left the game against the Paladins, as well. He was not mentioned by Shane Beamer as part of this week’s injury report, but Beamer did say that the players who left Saturday’s contest could be considered questionable.

In a friendly-fire helmet-to-helmet collision with linebacker Debo Williams, defensive back Keenan Nelson, Jr. left the Furman game and did not return. He is also questionable for next Saturday against the Dawgs.

Defensive backs David Spaulding and Nick Emmanwori remain questionable for week 3, the same designation that the two players had early last week before being downgraded to doubtful and then being held out of the game against Furman.

Defensive end Jatius Geer and offensive lineman Markee Anderson have been updated to probable (very probably for Anderson), and Beamer expects them to make their Gamecock debuts on Saturday.

Depth players Bradley Dunn (running back) and JonDarius Morgan (offensive line) are questionable for next week.
