South Carolina Football: Watch the vicious stiff-arm that highlighted the Gamecocks’ last game against Furman
By Kevin Miller
South Carolina football has only played Furman twice in recent in recent memory. The Gamecocks knocked off the Paladins in lopsided fashion in both 2010 and 2014. However, the 2023 version of the Paladins is much better than those Furman squads, and the Gamecocks were on their best-ever run of success the last times the two teams matched up on the gridiron.
After a tough game against North Carolina, South Carolina football is looking to bounce back against Furman in their home opener on Saturday. The game will kick off at 7:30 on the SECNetwork+ and the ESPN App.
The last time the Gamecocks played the Paladins, one of the most vicious stiff arms in the history of football rocked Williams-Brice Stadium.
In a game still tied at 7-7, the Gamecocks were threatening to score with about 5 minutes to go in the opening period. After taking the handoff near the 10-yard line, running back Mike Davis bounced a run outside toward the sideline and ran right into Furman EDGE player Gary Wilkins near the line of scrimmage.
However, whereas most running backs would go down against a larger player in a similar situation, #28 had other ideas. Just five yards from the end zone, Davis was still five yards from where he wanted to be.
As Wilkins squared up to Davis, he was not expecting what the Gamecock ball carrier had coming for him. Davis drove the defensive end into the ground with a stiff arm so strong that Wilkins ended up with the top of his helmet on the ground and his feet flailing in the air before flipping over in embarrassment.
Davis ended up in the end zone, giving the Gamecocks a lead they would not relinquish. South Carolina bested the Paladins 41-10 that day, but the most memorable moment came courtesy of Mr. Davis.
