SEC Football Power Ranking, Week 2:
LSU Tigers (Preseason 3rd)

The next several weeks will reveal a lot about LSU as they play SEC foes in five of their next six contests. Are the Tigers closer to the national championship contending team most projections believed them to be, or are they more like the team that got curb-stomped by Florida State on Sunday?

Brian Kelly’s team is, without a doubt, one of the most talented groups in the SEC, but with a loss already on their resume, LSU probably must be perfect the rest of the way to make it to the College Football Playoff. With road trips to both Mississippi schools, Missouri, and against the rival Crimson Tide of Alabama, that seems like a near-impossible task.

If the Tiger can climb such a steep mountain, it will be because of quarterback Jayden Daniels. Against Florida State, he was far from perfect but was one of two bright spots along with receiver Brian Thomas, Jr. If Thomas and Malik Nabers can be reliable weapons for Daniels, the LSU passing game will be fine, but the ground attack was non-existent against FSU other than Daniels.

LSU is certainly better than the seventh-best team in the SEC, but based on how they were thoroughly dismantled just a few days ago, putting them any higher would be a disservice to the teams that have played well up to this point in the young season. If LSU is for real, they will rise back up the power rankings sooner rather than later.
