SEC Football Power Rankings, Week 2:
No. 12: Auburn Tigers (Preseason: 12th)

Auburn smacked UMass in week 1, but against a roster with SEC talent, the Minutemen were not much of a test for the Tigers in Hugh Freeze’s debut as the head coach on the Plains.

Payton Thorne got the start at quarterback and was just ok for Phillip Montgomery’s offense. Backup Robbie Ashford didn’t do much as a passer, either, but he scored three touchdowns in the rushing game.

Despite surrendering just 14 points to UMass, Auburn gave up over 300 yards of offense to the outmatched Minutemen, bringing questions about the team’s defense that finished last year in the middle of the pack in the SEC.

A trip out west to play against the Cal Bears will be a better test than the game in week 1 against one of the worst teams in all of FBS. Cal is not expected to be very good in 2023, but they will have much more talent than UMass. Another gimme game against Samford comes next before a road trip to College Station for the team’s firs SEC football game of the year.
