SEC Football Power Rankings, Week 2:
No. 4 Texas A&M Aggies (Preseason 5th)

The New Mexico Lobos didn’t stand a chance against the Texas A&M Aggies this past weekend, so Jimbo Fisher’s squad winning 52-10 is not why they are this high in the power rankings. No, with LSU’s loss to Florida State, someone had to move up, and the Aggies got the nod due to coaching.

Specifically, A&M gets moved up here because Jimbo Fisher spoke very highly of new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino after the game and seemed…sincere? One of the hottest questions of this offseason in college football has been centered around whether or not Fisher could relinquish playcalling duties, especially to someone with a big personality like Petrino.

So far, so good for the Fisher-Petrino relationship, but we will see how things look the first time they go a few drives without scoring against a decent opponent.

That potentially might not be too far in the future as the Aggies will be traveling to Miami to take on the Hurricanes next weekend in a battle of teams who disappointed severely in 2022.

Quarterback Conner Weigman had a good start to his first full season as a starter, and the Aggie defense also had a nice day against New Mexico. With a stiffer test coming against Miami, SEC football fans will have a clearer picture of just how improved the Texas A&M defense is this fall.

If Weigman is good, and the defense takes the step forward that is expected of them, Texas A&M will be “back,” and Jimbo Fisher’s job will be safe.
