South Carolina Football: Gamecocks’ updated injury report
By Kevin Miller
The South Carolina football program could have been called a mash unit instead of a football team after the Gamecocks’ loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday.
Coming into the game, several players were already hurt but were expected to play. Wide receiver Antwane “Juice” Wells was questionable with a foot injury, linebacker Mo Kaba had been limited coming off of his ACL tear last season, and offensive lineman Cason Henry and defensive back David Spaulding both missed a lot of time overcoming various injuries this offseason.
All four of those players left the game with injuries and did not return. Beamer has called Wells’ issue a “re-aggravation” of his foot ailment.
Kaba will be out “at least a while,” but Beamer added that there would be more of an announcement on him later, something that usually indicates bad news is coming.
Henry left with a knee injury that Coach Beamer said would leave him out for a while.
Spaulding left the game after not much action. His injury has not been addressed.
A handful of seemingly healthy players also got hurt during the game and did not return to the action. Safety Nick Emmanwori (hamstring) and wide receiver Ahmarean Brown (undisclosed).
Another group of players did not play at all. Offensive lineman Markee Anderson, tight end Connor Cox, defensive end JT Geer, and linebacker Bam Martin-Scott were all questionable heading into the game but were not ready to go. Offensive linemen Jaylen Nichols and Ryan Brubaker are still expected to be out for a while.
Defensive end Terrell Dawkins, linebacker Grayson “Pup” Howard, linebacker Stone Blanton, running back Juju McDowell, and wide receiver Nyck Harbor were among a group of other players banged up during fall camp who were active for the game.
Wide receiver Xavier Legette left the game a couple of times with undisclosed ailments, but he returned each time. He was not included in Beamer’s injury report.
Officially for the week of South Carolina football’s matchup with the Furman Paladins, Markee Anderson, Nick Emmanwori, and Juice Wells are questionable. Ahmarean Brown is probable and most likely to play. Cason Henry is out. Kaba is out. The long-term injuries for Nichols and Brubaker will keep them out, as well. Legette and Spaulding were not mentioned.
The South Carolina football team will play Furman at home at Williams-Brice Stadium this Saturday at 7:30 on the SECNetwork+.
