South Carolina Basketball: Aliyah Boston has career game
By Kevin Miller
South Carolina basketball Aliyah Boston is the best rookie in the WNBA. In fact, she might be the best rookie to ever play in the league as she has already become a big-time player in the professional ranks.
Aliyah Boston was selected as a starter for the 2023 WNBA All-Star Game, a game in which she was teammates with fellow Gamecock greats Aja Wilson and Allisha Gray.
Boston is also on pace to fight for the league’s all-time record for field goal percentage as she is right in line with the career average for Sylvia Fowles who is the current record-holder.
In what has been a tremendous start to her young career, Aliyah Boston might have just had her best game. On Friday, the Indiana Fever star scored a career-high 27 points in a double-double against the Dallas Wings. Boston shot 11-17 from the field and dished out five assists.
In what has been a relatively disappointing year for the Fever, Boston has been a bright spot. She is the main reason for the progress that the Fever have seen in 2023 as the team has more than doubled their win total from a season ago.
Still in line for a high draft pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, Indiana could be adding another superstar as players like Iowa guard Caitlin Clark, LSU forward Angel Reese, Stanford forward Cameron Brink, and UConn guard Paige Beuckers are all draft-eligible players who could continue their elite play at the professional level. The Fever, most likely, will land one of those talents next summer.
If Boston can be paired with another dominant frontline player like Reese or Brink, the Fever might boast the top frontcourt in the league. If her franchise drafts a transcendent guard like Clark or Beuckers, opposing teams won’t be able to focus on one area of the court for fear of being beaten on the other.
With the offseason closing in, Aliyah Boston and the Fever will play the Wings again on Sunday in their fourth-to-final game of the season.
