In what was an abundantly obvious decision, the WNBA selected South Carolina basketball legend Aja Wilson as the WNBA Western Conference Player of the Week for her efforts last week.

Early last week, Wilson tied the WNBA record by scoring 53 points in the Las Vegas Aces’ victory over the Atlanta Dream. For the week, Wilson also logged two double-doubles and averaged over 25 points per game, almost 10 rebounds each contest, blocked three shots a night, and shot a very efficient 55% from the field.

Wilson is one of two leading candidates for the WNBA MVP award along with New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart. Wilson, a two-time winner of the award, trails Stewart in scoring and assists, while also holding a significant advantage in shooting percentage and blocked shots. Steal stats, rebounding, and free throw percentages are close to even for the two players.

In addition to her personal high level of play, Wilson’s Aces squad also sits atop the WNBA standings (Stewart’s Liberty team is in second place).

This is the third time in the 2023 season that Aja Wilson has been selected as the WNBA Western Conference Player of the Week. She was also the Western Conference Player of the Month for both June and July, the leading vote-getter in the 2023 WNBA All-Star Game, set the record for best in-game field goal percentage on high volume, and became the fastest WNBA player ever to reach career numbers of 3500 points, 1500 rebounds, and 300 blocked shots.

Accolades and honors come in on an almost weekly basis for the face of the WNBA. It comes as very little surprise, as well, that Wilson has sparked some recent conversation about her place in the all-time history of the league.

Is Aja Wilson the GOAT right now? No, she still has a long way to go before she can claim that title. However, can Aja Wilson become the greatest of all-time? Without a doubt.
