South Carolina football fans had hoped to hear some good news on their favorite team’s chances at landing 4-star running back Daniel Hill heading into his August 23rd commitment date. Instead, the news that came out was that there would be no commitment on August 23rd after all.

Hill has an official top-3 of South Carolina, Alabama, and Tennessee, and things had been looking good for the Gamecocks. South Carolina football had appeared to be a pretty clear leader for Hill, and Nick Saban’s Alabama program was comfortably in second. Tennessee, though named a finalist, does not seem to be in the running for Hill, realistically.

It is unclear what a delay in announcing his commitment might mean for Hill’s recruitment and which team he may play for in the future.

Any time that a particular team is leading for a recruit, that program, understandably, wants the prospect to pull the trigger quickly and announce a decision because it means good news for the program. In that regard, it makes sense if South Carolina football fans have gotten a little antsy since the announcement.

The choice to delay his decision appears odd. On Monday, less than 24 hours before revealing the delay, Hill tweeted out a countdown of sorts to his commitment with a message that read “August 23rd” with an hourglass emoji alongside.

No details have come out publicly about why Hill has decided to postpone his announcement, but Gamecock football fans are hopeful that the end result is still him donning a South Carolina hat and committing to the Gamecocks.

Head coach Shane Beamer and running backs coach Montario Hardesty have secured one major running back commitment in the class of 2024 in 4-star back Matthew Fuller, but the South Carolina roster is in need of two additions at the position in the class. Hill has not announced a new commitment date.
