South Carolina football has a quarterback committed in both the class of 2024 (4-star Dante Reno) and the class of 2026 (Landon Duckworth, who is currently unranked because the 2026 class has not been ranked yet). As most teams tend to take, on average, one quarterback per recruiting cycle, the Gamecocks have also been in on some 2025 quarterback prospects.

One of these such prospects is Findlay, Ohio native Ryan Montgomery. On Tuesday, the 4-star signal caller released his top-5 schools.

Montgomery announced South Carolina, Michigan, Penn State, Georgia, and Florida as his five finalists.

As a player, the 6’3″ Montgomery is an extremely accurate passer. He’s so accurate, in fact, that he won the accuracy challenge at the Under Armour Future 50 Camp earlier this summer.

Just because he is an accurate passer does not mean that Montgomery possesses a weak throwing arm, however. In fact,

On3 has Montgomery rated as a 3-star prospect, but the rest of the recruiting industry (247Sports, ESPN, and Rivals) all have him rated as a 4-star player in the class of 2025.

Montgomery’s older brother Luke was a 4-star offensive lineman who signed with Ohio State in the class of 2023. The younger Montgomery brother has an offer from the Buckeyes but, at least according to his top-5 announcement on Tuesday, the hometown team is not in the running to get a commitment from the 4-star quarterback.

South Carolina football is viewed as having a real shot to land Montgomery, but the other four programs in his top-5 won’t go down without a fight.

Michigan routinely does extremely well in recruiting Ohio-based recruits that don’t go to Ohio State.

Georgia is Georgia.

Penn State already has an elite offensive tackle and running back committed in the class, two nice enticements for a quarterback prospect.

And Florida has been a big-time quarterback destination for years.

Gamecock offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains has headed up the recruitment for Montgomery, and it looks like he is in for a battle.
