South Carolina Football: Gamecocks left off of another preseason poll
By Kevin Miller
South Carolina football is in the unique position of having a wide variety of realistic preseason expectations. With the nation’s most difficult schedule but also lots of reasons for optimism regarding the direction of the program, the Gamecocks’ preseason projections have been all over the place.
Some betting outlets have USC sitting between 6 wins and 7 wins for the 2023 season, while some college football analysts believe the Gamecocks could win up to 9 games in the regular season.
Recently, the preseason USAToday Coaches Poll was released, and the Gamecocks sat just outside of the top-25 rankings at #27.
The preseason AP poll was released on Monday, and the South Carolina football program was nowhere to be found in the top-25.
Exactly like the preseason USAToday Coaches Poll, the Gamecocks were on the “Also Receiving Votes” list and wound up in the 27th spot.
Carolina is set to play five teams from the AP Poll’s top-25 (including three of the top-12) and three more from the “Also Receiving Votes” list. In other words, the Gamecocks most likely will play at least five good teams in 2023. One of the teams not on the list, Missouri, has also given USC trouble in recent years, winning four in a row over the Gamecocks.
