With fall camp just getting underway for most teams in the SEC, “list season” is finishing up as football season is drawing nearer. In what will be one of the final “lists” of the offseason, multiple South Carolina football alums received high praise.

Earlier this week, SECNetwork personality Matt Stinchcomb was asked to give his all-time SEC East defense in the 12+ team SEC era (since 1992). The former Georgia offensive lineman was a bit of a homer, including three Bulldogs (two of them his own teammates), but he made sure to include players from other teams, as well.

Two former Gamecocks made the list. Among his defensive front, South Carolina football great John Abraham joined Kevin Carter (Florida), Richard Seymour (Georgia), and Jevon Kearse (Florida). In Stinchcomb’s DB room, Gamecock All-American Stephon Gilmore was part of a secondary that also included Champ Bailey (Georgia), Eric Berry (Tennessee), and Reggie Nelson (Florida).

Because Stinchcomb knew that making a list like this would draw the ire of fans from every school in the SEC (“What about MY team’s player?!?!), he also included an honorable mention of sorts that he entitled “What about us?” On this “What about us?” list, Stinchcomb included another former Gamecock great: defensive end Jadeveon Clowney.

For their college careers, Abraham, Gilmore, and Clowney cemented themselves as some of the best to ever play in front of the Gamecock faithful at Williams-Brice Stadium. Beyond that, into their pro careers, each one of them made at least one All-Pro team in the NFL. Both Abraham and Gilmore have a chance to make it to the Pro Football Hall of Fame one day.
