South Carolina Football: 4-star wide receiver commits to Gamecocks
By Kevin Miller
South Carolina football’s last commitment came over a month ago when high school linebacker (likely a college safety) David Bucey pledged his services to Shane Beamer’s team. There have been a lot of close calls for the Gamecocks, but it hurts not landing players like Keylen Adams, Liam Andrews, and DD Holmes who were once considered Gamecock leans.
Thankfully for South Carolina football fans, the skid stopped on Sunday evening. 4-star athlete (wide receiver/defensive back) Zi’marion Lang announced his commitment to South Carolina over a top-4 that also included Kansas State, South Florida, and Pittsburgh.
It was destiny for the Palmetto, Florida native to make a move to the Palmetto State, and Lang’s commitment makes him the 14th public pledge of the Gamecocks’ 2024 recruiting class.
Lang has some impressive film as a wide receiver and has a 3-star rating from On3, 247Sports, and ESPN at the position. Rivals rates the 6’3″, 170-pound prospect as a 4-star receiver. He also has played quarterback as his high school team’s top athlete.
However, there also is some intrigue from South Carolina in Lang playing defensive back. His fluid athleticism, length, and good top-end speed could lead to a successful college career on offense or defense.
Gamecock defensive backs coach Torrian Gray has been the primary recruiter for Lang, and the coaching staff likes him on either side of the ball. Based on his greater experience as a receiver, and the need for numbers at the position in this recruiting class, it seems likely Lang will start his career in Justin Stepp’s wide receiver room, but a move to defense is certainly on the table.
Lang joins consensus 4-star receiver Mazeo Bennett as the only wideouts so far in the class of 2024 for the Gamecocks. 4-star speedster Jonathan Paylor also is set to announce his decision in the upcoming week (August 5th) and is believed to be choosing between South Carolina football and NC State.
