South Carolina Football: 4-star wide receiver target announces commitment
By Kevin Miller
South Carolina football has been in the game with a lot of talented wide receivers in the 2024 recruiting class. South Carolina native Mazeo Bennett (from Greenville High School) has been committed to the Gamecocks for months after flipping from the original pledge he made to Tennessee.
A ridiculous amount of 4-star wide receivers joined Bennett in their interest in the South Carolina football program, but the Gamecocks focused their recruiting efforts on a smaller list of prospects that fit what head coach Shane Beamer, offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains, and wide receivers coach Justin Stepp are looking for in pass catchers.
One of the players that Stepp and company have recruited hard is 4-star Keylen Adams. Adams is one of the top players in this cycle in the state of Virginia and surprised many who follow recruiting when he released a top-5 list that included South Carolina (to go along with Virginia Tech, Alabama, Ohio State, and Pittsburgh).
For the next month or so, South Carolina football was viewed as the clear leader for Adams. Alabama was heavily involved in his recruitment still, and the hometown Virginia Tech Hokies were hanging around.
Over the past few weeks, however, Adams’ recruitment has flipped on its head. Virginia Tech, powered by NIL and a hometown pull, surged forward.
On Thursday, Adams announced his commitment via a small ceremony with his family.
As came to be expected, Keylen Adams committed to Virginia Tech and head coach Brent Pry.
The first Signing Day is still five months away, and the second is almost 7 months from now. With any recruitment that shifts as quickly as Adams’ process did, a verbal commitment does not seem like the end of the road.
The Gamecocks are expected to continue pursuing Adams. They are still viewed as the leader for 4-star receiver Jonathan Paylor (who is set to commit publicly later in July) and have several other irons in the fire deeper on the recruiting board who could come into play if the Adams commitment sticks.
Florida receiver Zy’marion Lang could be a player to watch if the South Carolina football staff elects to try to pivot to another high school target. He is set to announce a decision at the end of the month.
