WATCH: Aliyah Boston hits clutch buzzer beater to force overtime
By Kevin Miller
South Carolina basketball alum Aliyah Boston has moved from being a college basketball star to a star in the WNBA. After becoming the Gamecocks’ second-ever 1st-overall pick in the WNBA Draft, Boston was named the WNBA’s Rookie of the Month for both May and June and is well on her way to winning the award in July.
In the final game for the Indiana Fever before the WNBA’s All-Star break, Aliyah Boston played the role of hero, leading a 15-poing 4th quarter comeback against a superior New York Liberty squad and then sending her Fever to overtime at the buzzer.

Boston hit the tough off-the-dribble 3-pointer to give the Fever a chance to extend the game. Unfortunately, the Fever ran out of gas after the furious comeback and couldn’t hang with the Liberty in the extra period. Indiana fell to New York by a score of 95-87.
Outside of Aliyah Boston’s All-Star performance, the Fever have struggled most of the 2023 WNBA season. However, with a star like Boston on the roster, free agent players could start flocking to Indiana as soon as next season.
When A’ja Wilson was selected with the first pick in 2018, the Las Vegas Aces finished below .500 her rookie year, but as she got better as a player, the rest of the roster got better around her, as well. In 2022, her Aces broke through and won the WNBA championship last year. Aliyah Boston’s career trajectory could mirror her fellow Gamecock’s career.
