South Carolina basketball great Aja Wilson has been winning awards her entire life. She was the top-ranked recruit in the country coming out of Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, South Carolina, and she won countless awards during her time with the Gamecocks.
After her highly decorated collegiate career, Wilson was the first selection in the 2018 WNBA Draft. She continued to rack up accolades as she has won two MVP awards and made the All-Star Game each year she has been in the league (including being the league’s top vote-getter for this year’s All-Star Game).
This weekend, though, news broke that Aja Wilson could be winning one particular award for the first time in her career.
According to ESPNW, the Twitter account for women’s sports at ESPN, Aja Wilson is set to become the winner of the 2023 Best WNBA Player ESPY award.

The ESPYs will take place on Wednesday, July 12th at 8:00 EST on ABC and the ESPN App.
This year’s ESPYs will be different than any other as the award show will be without a host for the first time in its 31-year history. Due to the ongoing writers’ strike in the entertainment business, ESPN was unable to hire writers to produce the content and funny jokes that have been used by past hosts like Peyton Manning, Samuel L. Jackson, and Jamie Foxx.
It is unclear what the show will look like without a host, but all awards and honors will still be handled as normal, including the presentation of Aja Wilson’s Best WNBA Player ESPY trophy.
Wilson has been nominated for two other ESPYs, as well. The Best Female Athlete and Best Team (Las Vegas Aces) ESPYs could also belong to the South Carolina basketball alum after Wednesday night.
