It was announced recently that South Carolina basketball legend Aja Wilson was the leading vote-getter for among all players eligible for the 2023 WNBA All Star Game. Wilson was, thus, awarded with the captaincy for one of the exhibition game’s teams, meaning she was going to be able to select which fellow All-Stars she got to play with during the WNBA All Star Game.

Fellow South Carolina basketball greats Aliyah Boston and Allisha Gray were also selected as All-Stars (Boston as a starter, Gray as a reserve), so when it came time to pick squads for the July 15th Las Vegas-hosted game, the choices were easy for Wilson.

Wilson selected her three Las Vegas Aces teammates (Kelsey Plum, Chelsea Gray, and Jackie Young) and her two fellow Gamecocks (Aliyah Boston and Allisha Gray). Arike Ogunbowale, Alyssa Thomas, Cheyenne Parker, Dewanna Bonner, and Elena Delle Donne rounded out Team Wilson.

Gray played for one season with Wilson at South Carolina after transferring from North Carolina (she sat out the previous year but practiced with the team), but neither Gray nor Wilson played with Boston as both older players were already in the WNBA by the time Boston arrived in Columbia to play for coach Dawn Staley.

With three former South Carolina basketball stars lacing up their sneakers for the WNBA All Star Game, Gamecock fans likely have some added interest in this year’s event. The game will be played at Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, July 15th at 8:30 EST. The game will be broadcast on ABC and the ESPN App.

For those interested, the WNBA Skills Challenge and 3-Point Contest will take place on Friday, July 14th. The 3-Point Contest will air on ESPN and 4:00, and the Skills Challenge will also be broadcast on ESPN, but the time for the Skills Challenge has yet to be decided.
