South Carolina Basketball: Former player coming back to coach for Gamecocks
By Kevin Miller
A new rule change in college basketball will allow an additional coach to join college basketball staffs. The same legislation that allowed the South Carolina baseball team to add Joey Holcomb as a full-time coach also allows the South Carolina basketball program to add a 4th assistant coach to Dawn Staley’s sideline.
It appears that Staley has tabbed her new coach, and the name will be a familiar one to Carolina fans.
Former Gamecock Khadijah Sessions is set to become the 4th assistant coach for Dawn Staley’s South Carolina basketball program.
Sessions played four seasons for the Gamecocks from 2012-2016 and was a major contributor all four of her collegiate years, starting most of three years in garnet and black. As the unquestioned starter in the 2015-2016 season, she played alongside all-time Gamecock great like A’ja Wilson, Tiffany Mitchell, and Alaina Coates, was the most accurate 3-point shooter on the squad, and led the team in steals.
She is tied for the most games ever played in a season with 37 and ranks in the top-20 in Gamecock history in assists, steals, and games played.
In her career, South Carolina basketball won at least one game in all four of their NCAA Tournament appearances and advanced to three Sweet Sixteens and a Final Four. The Gamecocks won three SEC regular season championships during her tenure in Columbia and two SEC Tournaments.
After graduating, Sessions played professionally overseas for a short time before getting into coaching. Sessions coached both privately and at the high school level with Columbia-area institution Ridge View High School, where she helped coach former Gamecock (and current Memphis Grizzly) GG Jackson.
The new 4th assistant coaches across the country will be full-time assistants but will not be able to help with off-campus recruiting efforts.
Sessions joins Jolette Law, Lisa Boyer, and the newly-hired Winston Gandy as South Carolina basketball assistant coaches.
