South Carolina basketball picked up a commitment on Sunday from Austin Herro, a class of 2023 combo guard from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. If that last name sounds familiar, it should.

Austin Herro’s older brother is former Kentucky Wildcat and current NBA star Tyler Herro who plays for the Miami Heat.

Austin Herro is not quite as tall or athletic as his brother, but the younger Herro can still score the basketball. Herro is a good shooter from the outside and can make off-balance shots in traffic. Listed at 6’2″ or 6’3″ depending on where one finds his information, Herro is still a bit thin at 180 pounds, but he will have a chance to develop into a scoring threat for the Gamecocks.

In his senior season, Herro averaged over 15 points per game, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists as he led his Whitnall High School squad to the Wisconsin state championship game. Herro primarily played shooting guard in high school but has some ballhandling and passing chops that could see him fill in at point guard at times in the future.

Herro will be joining the South Carolina basketball program as a preferred walk-on, filling the spot vacated by fellow combo guard Ford Cooper as the former Gamecock is now at Hampton after transferring earlier this offseason.

With upperclassmen Ta’lon Cooper, Meechie Johnson, Jacobi Wright, and Ebrima Dibba all expected to play either guard spot and the versatile sophomore Zachary Davis also returning, Herro is not expected to be forced into action early in his career as a Gamecock.

The addition of Austin Herro marks coach Lamont Paris’ eighth new Gamecock to join the team for the 2023-2024 season. He joins fellow freshmen Collin Murray-Boyles (4-star power forward), Arden Conyers (3-star combo forward), and Morris Ugusuk (3-star combo guard) and transfers BJ Mack (forward/center), Myles Stute (combo forward), Ta’lon Cooper (point guard), and Stephen Clark (forward/center).
