South Carolina Football’s No. 13 Greatest Offensive Performance of All-Time:
Tommy Suggs and Fred Zeigler vs. Virginia

In 1968, the Gamecocks broke in a new starting quarterback in sophomore Tommy Suggs, but no one knew that the kid from Lamar would lead the Gamecocks to their first-ever conference championship in 1969. Suggs has credited the end of his 1968 season with giving him enough confidence to perform well in the championship ’69 season.

His best performance at the end of ’68 (and the best of his career) came against the Virginia Cavaliers. Suggs obliterated the old Gamecock passing records in Charlottesville when he threw for 312 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Suggs’ top target in the 49-28 shellacking was Gamecock legend Fred Zeigler. Zeigler caught ten of Suggs’ 14 completed passes and racked up 199 yards and 3 touchdowns. Fellow receiver Benny Golladay caught two long touchdowns from Suggs, as well.
