In what was a busy weekend of visits for South Carolina football, numerous blue chip prospects had the red carpet rolled out for them by the Gamecock coaching staff. One major target for defensive coordinator Clayton White and defensive backs coach Torrian Gray is high-upside safety Kaj Sanders.
Sanders is a 4-star prospect according to On3 and is viewed as one of New Jersey’s top recruits. Sanders released a top-10 in May that included South Carolina, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Miami, North Carolina, Rutgers, Penn State, Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Maryland. He was on his official visit to Columbia last weekend, took an official to Wisconsin last week, and has visits lined up to Penn State and North Carolina.
During his official visit to the University of South Carolina, Torrian Gray and Clayton White made sure Sanders felt that he was a priority recruit for the South Carolina football staff. His family came with him on his visit and left Columbia impressed by what they experienced.
As a player, the Bergen Catholic School product is oozing with potential. His 6’0″, 180-pound frame has room to add muscle, and his track background (10.8 in the 100-meter) indicates that he is a fast twitch and coachable athlete, something every defensive backs coach in the world wants to see from their safeties.
The Oradell, New Jersey native also plays some running back for Bergen Catholic but is fully expected to be a safety when he begins playing at the next level.
The Gamecocks have a number of highly-touted young secondary players on the roster already, but no team can ever have too many good defensive backs competing with one another. With Torrian Gray’s track record as a defensive backs coach, whoever ends up winning the starting jobs in the secondary are sure to become quality players.
According to a tweet on his personal Twitter account, Sanders plans to publicly announce his commitment at the end of July.
